The Institute for Managing Sustainability at Vienna University of Economics and Business in collaboration with the Austrian Development Agency (ADA) and the European Evaluation Society (EES) is pleased to invite you to a symposium on “Evaluating the Sustainable Development Goals. New Challenges for Research, Policy and Business” on October 28, 2015. With the adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by the United Nations in September 2015, a new set of objectives for global sustainable development will guide the global development agenda. The SDGs provide a comprehensive approach, ensuring a high level of ambition for achieving results, involving development agencies and governments, international organisations, civil society and business. Coinciding with 2015 as the International Year of Evaluation and the European Year of Development the symposium aims to be a forum for discussion on the implications of the SDGs for the evaluation of policies, programmes and projects across sectors. Prof. Clive L. Spash cordially invites you to a research seminar presented by Prof. Kevin Anderson (Professor of Energy and Climate Change, Deputy Director of the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research) with the title: “Ostrich or Phoenix: responding to the challenges of climate change”. The talk will be followed by a discussion panel with Ulrich Brand, Professor of International Politics, Universität Wien (Author: Beautiful Green World: Myths of a Green Economy), Magdalena Heuwieser, Finance & Trade Watch (Initiative: „System Change, not Climate Change!“), Manfred Kohlbach, Climate Change, Federal Ministry of Environment (Negotiator: Austrian delegation to UNFCCC) and Clive L. Spash, Professor of Public Policy & Governance (Author: Greenhouse Economics: Value and Ethics). This seminar will revisit the scale of the climate challenge, arguing that whilst the science of climate change has progressed, we obstinately refuse to acknowledge the rate at which our emissions from energy need to be reduced. Warum sich die Europäer vor dem „Chlorhendl“ und die Amerikaner vor dem Rohmilchkäse fürchten In diesem Jahr ist die Vortragsreihe „Wirtschaft und Umwelt“ dem Thema Lebensmittel, deren Produktionsmethoden und dem lokal-globalen Vertrieb gewidmet. Zu Gast ist unter anderem Werner Lambert, Erfinder der erfolgreichsten Bio-Marken im deutschen Sprachraum „Ja! Natürlich“ und „Zurück zum Ursprung“. Die Preise von landwirtschaftlichen Produkten werden am Markt bestimmt. So führt das gegenwärtige Überangebot von Milch in Europa zu niedrigen Preisen, gegen die die Bauern protestieren. Der Marktmechanismus – so wird argumentiert – ist nicht in der Lage, Umwelt- und Qualitätsaspekte der Lebensmittelproduktion adäquat zu berücksichtigen. Das rechtfertige ein Eingreifen des Staates in Agrarmärkte zum Schutz der KonsumentInnen. Auf globaler Ebene führt die durch Klimawandel (Kohlendioxid) verursachte Verschmutzung zu einer Erhöhung des Säuregehalts der Ozeane und gefährdet die marine Nahrungskette.
